Stree phir aa gayi! Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor
Must listen to these movie songs ,The first film of 2018 had the small town of Chanderi terrorised by a female spirit who returns centuries later to take revenge, kidnapping men at night if they are alone on the streets or if their homes do not have written instructions for her: O Stree Kal Aana (O woman, come tomorrow). Once, the men of this town had tormented her. With Stree 2, director Amar Kaushik recreates a Britney Spears song,
Aaj Ki Raat | Stree 2 | Tamannaah Bhatia
We saw how Stree comes into being in the first film, which ended with her statue being installed in the town, with a new instruction for her: O Stree Raksha Karna (O woman, protect us), allowing her to get the respect and honour that was denied to her, symbolically, and equally to all women. And we thought, all was well. The mindset of this deeply patriarchal town had changed. See! This time, a new demon has come to town. The one who had killed Stree, burnt her and her lover alive, separated her from her infant daughter. If women used to kidnap men, this Sarkata or a strange headless demon has come to kidnap women – progressive, modern women, who are alone. The literary character of the headless demon is centuries old,
Stree 2 | Official Trailer
Indian films do get this genre (horror comedy) right and Amar Kaushik’s insane debut film Stree (2018) is a rare one. Some films should not be touched. As is the case with sequels, the brilliance of the first films can never be matched. But Stree is different. If Stree’s brilliance was in its novelty and sharp poignancy, Stree 2’s charm is in its consistency, and the dialogues were a little absurd, both due to its lead characters as well as the writing. Though both films have their share of laughs, they should have been more. Stree 2 makes the foolish mistake of resorting to jump scares. The eerie, atmospheric film is even more scary, delivering jump scares. Jump scares are just fun.
Stree 2: Movie Review
Rajkummar Rao has given a brilliant performance in this film. Rajkummar Rao looks great even when he is scared or having fun. In Stree 2 too, he is doing a great job as Vicky, a tailor turned simpleton hero. The entrance of Vicky’s house has his new identity ‘Chanderi ka Rakshak’ written on it. And, despite an injury on his chin, Rao is able to meet our demands with his acting prowess. No other actor could have shown that unique smile on hearing Prem Bhaav
If the supernatural human-ghost love angle was great in the first film, the audience loves it in this film too. There is also a dreamy romantic song with the two in this film. The love chemistry of Vicky and the nameless ghost is great, but their action chemistry fighting together is also amazing. This chemistry is not going anywhere. Stree 3 will be made and like Jeannie Vicky, the audience will wait for him to come back so that he can fight a new monster. Stree 2 answers the questions that Stree 1 left us with. From the missing pages of the book Chanderi Purana, which are found in a letter to Rudra Bhaiya from an unknown source, to who Shraddha Kapoor really is: is she a witch or a female ghost and what is her connection to the ghost of the same name, Stree? This Kapoor has what most of the current Kapoor women in Bollywood lack. She can act and hold your attention. In her saviour avatar fighting to save women in her second film, she is almost, as if, atoning for all the sins her father Shakti Kapoor committed against women on screen as a villain in 80s Hindi films.
Shraddha Kapoor, who was icy as the mysterious woman who makes the hero dance on her finger in the first film, is brilliant as a female superhero in this film. Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif aside, if India plans to remake Marvel films, Shraddha should be cast as Wonder Woman or Black Widow. Oh, wait! It’s the same franchise. Maddock Supernatural Universe (MSU) is the MCU India has been waiting for, where it reverses the toxic tropes of the MCU and makes the characters relatable, even lovable. With Stree, Bhediya, Munjya, Maddock Films is expanding this ghost-werewolf narrative one film at a time, with sequels now coming out. If Varun Dhawan’s cameo in Stree 2 indicates that Bhediya 2 will be a similar film this year, it also indicates a vampire film coming. Vampires of Vijay Nagar is likely to release next year.
Abhishek Banerjee was born to play Jana. Full of energy and yet restrained, if this dude had to suffer the most at the hands of women before, here, his character is more robust, given powers and quirks. One particular scene, a close encounter with a demon, made the audience laugh a lot. In this film, he has the power of divyas.
If in the previous film, Aparshakti Khurana’s Bittu was full of energy and owned every scene, here too, the kidnapping of his supposed girlfriend turns him into a crybaby, chasing a herd, under the powers of evil forces, bringing out the misogyny.
Pankaj Tripathi, as always, brilliant acting
