Mirzapur Season 3:Brings more bloodshed

Mirzapur Season 3 review

After a four-year gap between seasons, the gangs and guns and hinterland series Mirzapur finally returns. Having killed their adversary Munna Tripathi (Divyenndu) at the end of season two, grievously injuring his father, Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi), Golu Gupta (Shweta Tripathi) and Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) are focused on consolidating their grip on Purvanchal.

The 10-episode third season swings between chaos and confusion, between strategizing and angst, between conflict, connivance and gruesome bloodshed. For the most part, the central characters are grappling with ambition to occupy the coveted throne of Mirzapur, which rules over the gangsters of the region. At the same time, they are trying to swat off the emotional tug of romantic attraction and filial loyalty.

Mirzapur Season 3, streaming on Prime Video, brings more bloodshed, power struggles, and intricate plotting, but it seems to falter in some areas compared to its previous seasons.

Story

The third season continues the intense rivalry between Guddu (Ali Fazal) and Golu (Shweta Tripathi Sharma) against the Tripathi family, now led by the widow and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Madhuri Yadav (Isha Talwar). With the power vacuum left by Munna’s death, the show dives deeper into the cutthroat battle for control of Mirzapur. The season is packed with elaborate schemes, betrayals, and a high body count, reflecting the show’s signature chaotic and violent world.

However, despite these elements, the season has received mixed reviews. While some moments and performances, particularly by Pankaj Tripathi and Vijay Varma, stand out, the narrative is criticized for its convoluted plot and excessive subplots that sometimes feel repetitive and lack momentum. The series’ ambition seems to overwhelm its execution, with some critics pointing out that the show treads water rather than advancing the story meaningfully (Scroll.in) (Live Mint).

For fans of the series, Mirzapur Season 3 offers the expected thrills, but it might not resonate as strongly as the earlier seasons. The show remains a blood-soaked spectacle, but its overindulgence in complexity may leave some viewers wanting a more focused narrative

Writers Apurva Dhar Badgaiyan, Avinash Singh Tomar and Vijay Narayan Verma and Avinash Singh stuff the series which at times feel like a whole lot of brimstone and fire and not much propulsion of plot. Directors Gurmmeet Singh and Anand Iyer expand the story even further. At 45 minutes each, the runtime feels excessive, with a surprising focus on each character’s complexes. Crisper episodes and some smarter conflicts would have been welcome. At times this season feels like an offering to legions of fans of this popular show.
